Elliot Alderson e' un giovane informatico che vive e lavora a New York come esperto di sicurezza informatica nella "AllSafe", ma nella vita privata e' uno stalker telematico con l'ossessione di conoscere i segreti delle persone. Un giorno Alderson viene contattato da una misteriosa persona, che si fa chiamare Mr. Robot, con l'intento di entrare attivamente in un gruppo di ribelli, conosciuti come fsociety, il cui obiettivo e' quello di liberare il mondo dall'oppressione delle banche e della finanza
