Two hundred years in the future, in a fully colonized solar system, police detective Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane), who was born in the asteroid belt, is given the assignment to find a missing young woman; Julie Mao (Florence Faivre). Meanwhile, James Holden (Steven Strait), the first officer of an ice freighter, is witness to an unprovoked attack upon the ship, by craft believed to be from Mars (MCRN Federation). As news of the attack spreads throughout the system, the incident's flow-on threatens to destabilize already tenuous relations between Earth, Mars and The Belt. Far away from the struggles in deep space, on Earth, Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), a powerful United Nations executive and diplomat, works to prevent war between Earth and Mars by any means. Soon, the 3 find out the missing woman and the ice freighter's fate are part of a vast covert conspiracy which threatens all humanity.

Gli ultimi anni del decennio che va a concludersi hanno visto un nuovo proliferare dei prodotti di intrattenimento in salsa fantascientifica - tra serie televisive, cinema, videogiochi, letteratura di genere - dopo una lunga fase in penombra che ha lasciato gli appassionati a bocca asciutta, dovendo farsi bastare prodotti poco ispirati e dalla dubbia qualità, con rare eccezioni rimaste di nicchia. Lo svilupparsi della tecnologia di produzione e sviluppo della computer grafica, unita ad un rinnovato interesse su ampia scala degli immaginari sci-fi, hanno portato ad una massiva ricomparsa multimediale di spazio, pianeti alieni ed astronavi. Il ritorno in pompa magna di brand iconici come Star Trek e Star Wars, le grandi saghe videoludiche, hanno portato sorprendentemente un ambiente storicamente molto legato ad una determinata sottocultura, ad un'esposizione su scala globale, entrando nei meandri del mainstream.
In questo rinascimento sci-fi, una saga in particolare è riuscita a catturare l'attenzione dei fan più affezionati al tema, riuscendo a distinguersi dal resto del panorama per la sua propensione ad una fantascienza nuda e cruda, tutta spazio, scontro tra umanità, metallo e una buona dose di pulp. Tra saga letteraria e serie televisiva, The Expanse è di gran lunga una delle migliori produzioni fantascientifiche degli ultimi anni, la cui fortuna sembrava però destinata all'oblio, dopo la decisione da parte dell'emittente SyFy di chiudere la serie troncandola dopo la terza stagione. Dopo un sollevamento popolare, gli Amazon Studios sono intervenuti prelevando la serie e proponendoci una quarta stagione che altrimenti sarebbe rimasta nel limbo delle idee.
