One day, after returning from work late in the evening, Hideo witnesses a traffic accident in which a car crashes into a nearby pedestrian, killing the victim instantly. However, despite severe injuries including a broken neck, the victim's body stands up and walks away. Hideo questions whether this is another one of his hallucinations, but strange events begin happening around him.

Sinopsis
Hideo Suzuki es un mediocre dibujante de mangas que dedica la mayor parte del tiempo a soñar despierto con una realidad en la que consigue editar sus propias historias, su jefe le respeta, la relación con su novia funciona bien… en definitiva, que su vida no es un desastre. Lamentablemente no es así, y por ello vive desilusionado por no poder ser el héroe que siempre está dibujando. Hasta que un día, sin previo aviso, una epidemia empieza a extenderse por Japón convirtiendo a los infectados en ZQN, unos monstruos sedientos de carne humana que mantienen leves vestigios de su vida pasada. Hideo tendrá que huir de Tokio a toda prisa, movido únicamente por su cobardía y el instinto de supervivencia, y por el camino irá encontrando a nuevos compañeros que le mostrarán el verdadero rostro del ser humano.
