You Rang MLord

You Rang M'Lord? is a BBC television sitcom written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft, the creators of Dad's Army, It Ain't Half Hot Mum and Hi-de-Hi! It was broadcast between 1990 and 1993 on the BBC (although there had earlier been a pilot episode in 1988). The show was a comedy set in the house of an aristocratic family in the 1920s, contrasting the upper-class family and their servants in a house in London, along the same lines as the popular drama Upstairs, Downstairs.

The series featured many actors who had also appeared in their earlier series, notably Paul Shane, Jeffrey Holland and Su Pollard, all of whom had previously been in Perry and Croft's holiday camp sitcom, Hi-de-Hi!. Also featured were Donald Hewlett and Michael Knowles from Perry and Croft's It Ain't Half Hot Mum, and Bill Pertwee and occasionally Frank Williams from Dad's Army. Numerous small parts were played by other alumni of David Croft and/or Jimmy Perry shows. The memorable 1920s-style theme tune was sung by Bob Monkhouse.

Episodes of You Rang M'Lord? were fifty minutes long, rather than the usual thirty (for BBC sitcoms), and attempted to introduce a more reflective approach and more complex plotting than other Croft and Perry series. There was also less reliance on filmed location sequences.

All that said, this is a very funny series which bears many of the hallmarks of Perry & Crofts other shows: a large ensemble cast, absurd situations, occasional slapstick, and subtle innuendo. Donald Hewlett and Michael Knowles are teamed again, as in It Ain't Half Hot, and portray similar characters. A few other IAHH alumni appear too.

Unlike most of Perry & Croft's other works, there are continuing story threads running through the episodes, and at 50 minutes per episode, this allows more complex and sophisticated storytelling. On the flip side, this also means that we're not being broadsided with a punchline every 15 seconds or so. This led, at the time, to the criticism that the show wasn't very funny. To be fair, no, it is not funny in the same way Are You Being Served? is. The humor is slower paced, the buildups more complex and deliberate, and the payoffs less reliant on double entendre and other easy, bawdy, quips. Not to say these are absent! It is Perry & Croft, after all, and there are regular references to the embarassing products manufactured by the Meldrum family's Union Jack Rubber Company. Also, The Hon. Teddy Meldrum (Knowles), quickly is introduced to the viewer as a scoundrel with an eye for the simple, well-scrubbed faces of the servant girls who attend the household, and a number of said girls have been retired early with a substantial settlement to keep them quiet, and to help care for Teddy's illegitimate heirs.

Although Paul Shane as Alf Stokes, the Meldrums' butler, and Jeffrey Holland as James Twelvetrees, the footman, are billed as the stars, for my money, it is Su Pollard as Ivy who really is the star. She stands in for the viewer among the cast, as the naive ingenue thrust into a strange and barely comprehensible new world, trying to make her way and establish herself in the unfamiliar order of things. She is completely endearing and charming.

The entire show, contained in this torrent, consists of four series, with 6 or 7 episodes in each series (or season, to use the American jargon). As noted before, each episode is about 50 minutes. Sorry, I don't have any technical info on the video or audio rendering. This collection is modified and corrected from an existing collection which contained some mislabelings and duplications.

My VLC Player reports with each of these files that the AVI index is broken or missing and may not seek correctly, and offers to rebuild the index. However, all the episodes seem to function correctly, and Windows Media Player reports no problems.
