An employee at a prison in upstate New York becomes romantically involved with a pair of inmates and helps them escape.



Si ispira a una storia vera, quella di tre personaggi alla ricerca della libertà che con un piano di fuga da veri artisti, riescono ad evadere per la prima volta nella storia dalla più grande prigione di massima sicurezza di New York. La serie è girata proprio nell'area in cui sono avvenuti i fatti del 2015, Dannemora, dove due uomini condannati per omicidio sono riusciti ad evadere dalla Clinton Correctional Facility, dando inizio a una fuga lunga 23 giorni.



Benicio Del Toro interpreta Richard Matt, colui che ha pensato alla fuga, un vero e proprio manipolatore che alterna la violenza all'arte dei suoi dipinti che ritraggono celebrità diverse: da Julia Roberts a Barack Obama. Insieme al suo compagno di blocco David Sweat - interpretato da Paul Dano – solitario, disturbato e maniaco dell'ingegneria, mette in piedi un ambizioso piano di fuga. A permetterne la realizzazione di questo sogno che sembra impossibile è Joyce “Tilly” Mitchell (Patricia Arquette), madre e moglie annoiata che lavora nella sartoria della prigione.
