The film is about Marlo, a mother of three, including a newborn. Marlo's brother gives her a night nanny as a gift. Hesitant with the extravagance at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully.



Marlo ha più di quarant'anni, due figli (di cui uno "problematico") e un terzo in arrivo, e non ne può proprio più. Fin dalle prime scene la vediamo sull'orlo di un esaurimento nervoso, nonostante la bella casa e il marito affettuoso. Il fratello Craig, che è diventato ricco anche se, come Marlo, è partito da una condizione disagiata, le offre come regalo di maternità una nanny notturna, di quelle che permettono alle neomamme di svegliarsi solo al momento della poppata e riaddormentarsi subito dopo. Inizialmente Marlo rifiuta, un po' per orgoglio e un po' perché non le piace l'idea di delegare il ruolo materno ad una sconosciuta.
