Trama:In a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.



Nel 2035 la gente vive un'altra dimensione. Miliardi di esseri umani si sono estinti a causa di un virus mortale che ha infettato il mondo: l'ha scoperto il virologo Leland Goines, premio Nobel. La superficie della Terra è diventata inabitabile; i pochi superstiti vivono nelle viscere di quella che fu Philadelphia, con il virologo e la sua équipe di gelidi scienziati ed un gruppo di prigionieri. Fra costoro vi è James Cole, che viene scelto ed equipaggiato per spedirlo in quella metropoli, all'indietro nel tempo a raccogliere informazioni. Cole sbuca nelle strade nevose di una città terrificante pressoché morta, dove passeggiano le fiere e i rarissimi relitti umani. Lo spirito e le forze di Cole (il riluttante "volontario") non sono però esauriti. Preso per pazzo (e forse lo è, ridotto tale dalla convivenza con gente folle, tra cui soprattutto Jeffrey, il giovane figlio di Leland, che lo ha fatto internare): ha intuizioni acute (pensa che il destino degli uomini sia ormai decretato per sempre) però si aggrappa ad un brandello di memoria infantile: la visione di un aeroporto, dove un bimbetto assiste ad una sparatoria. Incontrata ora una psichiatra, Kathryn Railly, questa lo assiste e Cole se ne innamora. Per il "volontario" il problema è di cercare indizi ed informazioni sulla tragedia mondiale che ha colpito chi allora era vivo con l'epidemia del virus, di decifrare quella immagine infantile e, infine, di lottare contro il malvagio e folle Jeffrey, messosi a capo dell'esercito delle 12 scimmie.
