But amidst half-baked leads and a desperate desire to shake off his shoulders the heavy burden of a personal hell, Joe's frenzied plummet into the depths of Tartarus is inevitable, and every step Joe takes to flee the pain, brings him closer to the horrors of insanity. In the end, what is real, and what is a dream? Can there be a new chapter in Joe's life when he keeps running around in circles?







Joe è un veterano di guerra, sopravvissuto anche a molte altre battaglie. A casa lo aspetta solo la madre anziana e malata, con cui ha un rapporto di grande affetto e pazienza. In una New York desolata e piena di segreti, il cui profilo nobile resta sempre in lontananza, Joe fa il mercenario per chi vuole liberarsi di nemici pericolosi ma non ne ha l'abilità o il coraggio. Il suo ultimo incarico è quello di sottrarre Nina, la figlia preadolescente di un politico locale, ad un giro di prostituzione minorile: una creatura abusata e offesa che fa da specchio al passato dell'uomo. Joe appare e scompare, spesso armato di un martello, come se non fosse mai stato lì (questa la traduzione del titolo originale), menando fendenti e scacciando con la stessa allucinata intensità i ricordi devastanti, tanto della propria infanzia in balia di un padre sadico, quanto dei crimini di guerra compiuti (anche da lui) dietro la giustificazione di una divisa. Quello di Joe è un universo di bambini perduti cresciuti alla mercè degli orchi e spesso diventati come loro, un mondo in cui l'uomo si muove come un giustiziere, cercando di rattoppare la sua vita ridotta ad un puzzle di sensazioni e (brutti) ricordi.
