Based on the off-Broadway stage musical of the same name.
The movie consists of 10 performers just like the Play.

8 eccentric modern day disciples follow the Christ figure around Manhattan reciting parables from the Gospels, interspersed with song and dance.
The 10th performer is a bit perplexing. Just like in the Play, he plays John the Baptist through most of the movie, then without even a costume change, plays Judas at the end of the movie.

The acting is vaudevillian and cheesy. The 2 saving graces of this movie are :
1) The production and vocal performances are stellar.
2) The movie displays Manhattans most iconic locations, such as :
The Brooklyn Bridge, Bethesda Fountain, Central Park, Times Square,
Lincoln Center, St. Patrick's Cathedral, The Andrew Carnegie Mansion,
Battery Park North, World Trade Center North Tower and Plaza, The old Hudson River pier and covered warehouse closest to the newly constructed World Trade Center complex, and aerial shots of the 1973 Manhattan skyline.
