Guardiani della Galassia 2 è il sequel dell'originale e scanzonato cinecomic diretto da James Gunn. Già dal titolo, che ammicca all'Awesome Mixtape #2, si capisce che è tempo di capovolgere la musicassetta vintage e scoprire il lato nascosto dei protagonisti del film che ha dato inizio al franchise. Il gruppo di eroi atipici e alieni singolari, più che Guardiani della galassia, svogliate sentinelle dello spazio, si tuffa in una nuova avventura per scoprire l'identità del padre di Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), lo spavaldo ladro spaziale incastrato suo malgrado nel ruolo di leader della sgangherata banda. Al fianco dell'impudente Star-Lord, a ranghi sciolti, tornano la bella e letale Gamora (Zoe Saldana), lo spietato Drax (Dave Bautista), l'irascibile Rocket (voce originale di Bradley Cooper) e ridotto a dimensioni bonsai l'indisciplinato, scattante Baby Groot (con la voce originale di Vin Diesel). La storia segue l'evoluzione individuale di ciascun componente e il faticoso processo di consolidamento come gruppo e nucleo familiare, cui si vanno aggiungendo nuovi personaggi, nemici redenti e parenti scomodi saltati fuori dai più remoti anfratti dell'universo. Tra gli interpreti del film troviamo anche Michael Rooker nel ruolo di Yondu, Karen Gillan in quello di Nebula, mentre Sean Gunn torna a interpretare Kraglin. Il cast include inoltre Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan e Kurt Russell nei panni di Ego, il padre di Peter Quill.
