Nel luglio del '74 la cronaca italiana annovera stranamente le morti tragiche di un maggiore, di un colonnello e di un generale. Trattandosi apparentemente di incidenti casuali, il commissario Solmi si sofferma sul successivo assassinio di Vittorio Chiarotti, un perito elettrotecnico che ben presto scoprirà essere invece un investigatore privato. Rimproverato dal giudice Mannino per i suoi metodi, aiutato invece dall'amica giornalista Maria, il poliziotto risale a una prostituta che viene uccisa e entra in contatto con il capitano Mario Sperlì dell'Ufficio Speciale Informazioni, un agente segreto politico che si dimostra interessato al caso e ammette l'esistenza di un fallito golpe contro la sicurezza dello Stato. Le indagini tuttavia, ristagnano anche quando l'accumularsi, tanto dei delitti quanto degli indizi, costringe il magistrato Mannino a mettersi dalla parte del commissario, puntualmente preceduto da una occulta forza che conosce tutto e subito. La scoperta di una mappa e le intuizioni del Solmi portano all'individuazione di un campo di addestramento clandestino e all'arresto del maggior colpevole, lo stesso Sperlì, alias avv. Rienzi, il quale tuttavia viene ucciso dal vicecommissario.





In July of '74 the Italian chronicle strangely noted the tragic deaths of a major, a colonel, and a general. As apparently casualties, Commissioner Solmi focuses on the next assassination of Vittorio Chiarotti, an electrical engineer who will soon find himself a private investigator. Scolded by Judge Mannino for his methods, assisted by the journalist Mary, the policeman goes back to a prostitute who is killed and comes into contact with Captain Mario Sperlì of the Special Information Bureau, a political secret agent who appears to be interested in Case and admits the existence of a failed coup against the security of the state. Investigations, however, are stagnant even when the accumulation of both the crimes and the clues forces the magistrate Mannino to stand on the part of the commissioner, promptly preceded by an occult force that knows everything and immediately. The discovery of a map and the insights of Solmi lead to the identification of an underground training camp and the arrest of the most culprit, Sperlì himself, alias avv. Holds him, but he is killed by the deputy commissar.
