Adventurer James Keziah Delaney returns to London during the War of 1812 to rebuild his late father's shipping empire. However, both the government and his biggest competitor want his inheritance at any cost - even murder.

In seguito alla morte del padre, James Keziah Delaney, dato da anni per disperso dopo un tragico naufragio al largo delle coste africane, fa improvvisamente ritorno in Inghilterra, ed eredita tutte le fortune del genitore. La notizia lascia di stucco non solo il marito della sorellastra Zylpha, che sperava di mettere le mani sull'eredità del defunto, ma anche il Presidente della Compagnia delle Indie Orientali Sir Stuart Strange, che non vede l'ora di mettere le mani su Nootka Sound, una piccola ma strategica striscia di terra sulla costa nordoccidentale dell'America Settentrionale che fa parte del lascito. James rifiuterà qualsiasi accordo, facendosi subito numerosi nemici: la Corona, gli americani, la Compagnia, il marito di Zylpha, e altri ancora. Al suo fianco, però, avrà anche alcuni fedeli alleati pronti a dare tutto per lui
