Vagando per la foresta, la pantera Bagheera scorge in un canestro dondolante sull'acqua di un laghetto un cucciolo d'uomo abbandonato a se stesso. Intenerita essa lo affida alle cure di una famiglia di lupi, con i quali Mowgli - questo è il nome che gli è stato dato - cresce fino a diventare uno sveglio ragazzino, amico di tutti gli animali. Un giorno, sparsasi nella foresta la voce che Shere-Khan, la tigre, è tornata per ucciderlo, i lupi lo affidano a Bagheera perchè lo conduca al villaggio degli uomini. Durante il viaggio, che affronta malvolentieri, Mowgli, sfuggito alle spire di Kaa, il serpente, stringe amicizia con Baloo, un orso balzano e mattacchione con il quale vaga per la foresta, finché viene rapito dalle scimmie. Liberato dai suoi amici Bagheera e Baloo, Mowgli, piu' che mai deciso a non raggiungere il villaggio degli uomini...
