Quando James Bowen trova davanti alla porta del suo alloggio popolare un gatto rosso, rannicchiato in un angolo, indifeso e ferito, non immagina quanto la sua vita stia per cambiare. James, ventisette anni, non ha un lavoro né una famiglia su cui contare. Vive alla giornata per le vie di Londra, e raccoglie qualche spicciolo suonando la chitarra davanti a Covent Garden e nelle stazioni della metropolitana. L'ultima cosa di cui ha bisogno è un animale domestico. Eppure non resiste a quella palla di pelo, che subito battezza Bob. Pian piano James riesce a farlo guarire, e a quel punto lascia il gatto libero di andare per la sua strada, convinto di non rivederlo più. Ma Bob è di tutt'altro avviso: per nulla al mondo intende separarsi dal suo nuovo amico e lo segue ovunque. Instancabile. Finché a James non rimane che arrendersi. E' l'inizio di una meravigliosa amicizia e di una serie di singolari, divertenti e a volte pericolose avventure che trasformeranno la vita di entrambi.


When James Bowen before the door of his popular accommodation a red cat, huddled in a corner, helpless and hurt, he can not imagine what his life is about to change. James, twenty-seven, did not have a job or a family to rely on. He lives for the day through the streets of London, and collects a few coins by playing the guitar in front of Covent Garden and in subway stations. The last thing it needs is a pet. Yet he resists the hairball, which immediately baptizes Bob. Slowly James manages to cure him, and then leaves the cat free to go its own way, convinced not see him again. But Bob has a different opinion: for the world intends to part with his new friend and follows him everywhere. Tireless. Until James can do is surrender. And 'the beginning of a wonderful friendship and a series of strange, funny and sometimes dangerous adventures that will change both their lives.
