Checco è stato allevato dal padre con il mito del posto fisso. A quasi 40 anni vive quella che ha sempre ritenuto essere la sua esistenza ideale: scapolo, servito e riverito dalla madre e dall'eterna fidanzata che non ha alcuna intenzione di sposare, accasato presso i genitori, assunto a tempo indeterminato presso l'ufficio provinciale Caccia e pesca, dove il suo incarico consiste nel fare timbri comodamente seduto alla scrivania. Ma le riforme arrivano anche per Checco, e quella che abolisce le province lo coglie impreparato: il suo status di single relativamente giovane lo rende idoneo alla richiesta "volontaria" delle dimissioni, a fronte di una buonuscita contenuta. Ma Checco, consigliato dal senatore che l'ha "sistemato", non cede alle richieste della "liquidatrice", la granitica dirigente Sironi e lei, al fine di liberarsene, lo spedisce in giro per tutta l'Italia, nelle sedi più disagiate e scomode. Checco si adatta e non molla. Alla Sironi non resta che tentare un'ultima carta: mandare l'impiegato al Polo Nord, in mezzo alle nevi perenni e agli orsi bianchi. Per fortuna al Polo c'è anche Valeria, una ricercatrice di grandi ideali e di larghe vedute che cambierà il destino del nostro eroe e gli farà scoprire i piaceri (e le responsabilità) di una vita civile.
